Sometimes it’s easy to think that once the warmer months hit, your car troubles will take a break! That could be true if you kept up with your basic maintenance year round, however, we do recommend a few things to get looked at this summer while the heat takes its toll on your vehicle. You should at least have these five things taken care of before you hid the road for any weekend getaways.
1. Coolant System
Keeping cool is a big deal, not just for us, but also for our cars. Always keep a good eye on the coolant fluid level in your vehicle, and have the hoses and coolant system inspected routinely for the health of your car. It’s also always a good idea to keep an eye out for any leaks that could arise from ware on the coolant system.
2. Engine Belts
Your serpentine belt runs between the alternator, the fan, and a few different parts under the hood. It can ware with time, loosen up, squeal, and break for no reason. It needs to be in good condition and have the precise tension necessary to perform at top capacity. If you see cracks in the belt it’s time to replace it. A mechanic you trust will be able to know what to look for and recommend to you when this should be done.
There are four things to remember when checking the condition of your wipers: squeaking, splitting, streaking and skipping. In any season, if you notice these behaviors on the wiper blades, it’s generally time to get them replaced. We recommend to have your wiper blades changed seasonally because usually how long they last.
4. Fluids and Filters
Your primary and important fluids and filters will be checked when you come into Integrity Automotive at every oil change. However, we do offer free oil top offs in between services, fluid checks, tire pressure and condition inspections as needed. Just give us a call before you’re on your way so we can be ready to meet you out front.
5. Air-Conditioning System
Air-conditioning is a summer essential. If the system hasn’t been working properly but wasn’t really an issue over the winter, we recommend getting it serviced. It’s not hard to distinguish whether or not your AC is working in proper condition. Is the cabin blowing hot air? Or is it struggling to get cold? You may be low on refrigerant, or you could potentially have a leak in your AC system. We recommend having a full AC diagnosis to determine the possible cause before getting your system recharged.
Tires really need to be checked regularly all year round. Pressures must be correct, treads should be free of road debris, and all four should be in good condition. Good condition means no cracks, no uneven wear, and plenty of tread depth. Since summer is a time for road trips, we recommend that you spend time to get prepared for any kind of road trouble you could run into. Always have the emergency needs to fix a flat, make sure you spare tire is in good condition, and be ready for any potential unplanned circumstance.
